Focus On The Pause-itive

It wasn’t my “dark night of the soul”, but it was close. I was pulling my hair out and crying myself to sleep. My young son and I were fighting all the time and it was getting worse, not better. I was a single Mom, widowed barely a year and felt like I was circling the drain, helpless and hopeless. I felt so a-l-o-n-e. I was desperate and so was my son.

Help!

The best thing I ever did was to ask for help, and it came from a caring counselor who came to our home once a week. Instead of asking us, “What’s wrong?” she asked, “What’s working?” And in the meantime, she suggested we press the “pause” button.

So we did. We invented our own “sign language”. Whenever he squeezed his elbow a certain way, it meant that he needed some space and that we should separate for a while before tempers and feelings flared. I would step outside for a few minutes or he would go to his room, to give him a chance to get out of 5th gear and back into first or second.

It worked.

We hit the “pause” button so we didn’t fight nearly as much and we focused on what was working and did more of that together. Yeah, there were a couple more “Jerry Springer” episodes in the years that followed, but by focusing on the positive and pressing the pause button, life became more like “Leave it to Beaver.”

Remember, ask for help. Then focus on the “Pause-itive.”
