The Law of Requisite Variety: Embracing the Unexpected

When the complexity of any sudden challenge exceeds our ability to deal with it, we can feel overwhelmed, lost, or even defeated. To prepare ourselves for the variety of problems the world throws at us, we need a repertoire of responses that are at least as strong as the problems we face.

**In other words, the only way to control your destiny is to be more flexible than your environment.**

Success in relationships, corporations, families, political systems, and all aspects of daily life hinges on our ability to adapt to changing situations and wear life like a loose garment. According to psychologists like Dr. Ramani Durvasula, the healthiest people have flexible psyches. Just as a physically healthy person has flexible joints and muscles, emotionally healthy people tend to respond more easily to change. They adapt, self-regulate, and maintain a heightened awareness of both themselves and others.

In today's world, the need for flexibility is more critical than ever. The recent wildfires in Los Angeles, ongoing global conflicts, and the political divisiveness exacerbated by the pandemic underscore the importance of the Law of Requisite Variety. These unprecedented events demand that we embrace adaptability and resilience to navigate the uncertainties they bring.

**Examples of the Law of Requisite Variety in Daily Life:**

- Parenting: Requires varied techniques to guide and support different children in different situations. It’s not a cookie-cutter scenario.

- Conflict Resolution: Employs strategies like mediation, negotiation, and compromise to address disputes effectively.

- Technology: Demands immense flexibility to keep up with the fast-paced evolution of AI, computers, systems, apps, and tools to enhance productivity.

**Bottom Line**: Going with the flow is the key to success in everything we do! Take a deep breath and don’t take life too seriously. There are millions of ways to do things. Embrace the unexpected with confidence in your ability to handle any situation. Only then can you think, live, be, move, and create outside the box and thrive in all you do!
