Do As I Do!

“What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.”

--Ralph Waldo Emerson

In the above picture my adult son came to visit and immediately threw himself into a backbend over my chair. I’ve never told him or taught him to do such a thing, but he has been watching me teach and practice yoga his entire life. Instead of, “Do as I say, not as I do,” children watch what we do and DO what we do. And sometimes, so do adults.

Studies have found only 7% of communication is verbal and 93% is nonverbal. That means everyone you know, from your spouse, family and friends to your co-workers and acquaintances, are watching you and gauging you by your non-verbal cues, which “speak so loudly no one hears what you say.”

Children learn from us by our non-verbal cues. So do our co-workers. So do those we love most dearly. They know whether we are judging or accepting them by our facial expressions and our body language.

That’s why it’s so essential to clear our thoughts, actions and beliefs daily, so we can eliminate some of our worst non-verbal cues. In other words, we need to stop sending messages we don’t want to send.

Your thoughts become your actions which become your deeds which becomes your destiny. Make sure your thoughts are sending the right messages, so you can literally rub off positive juju onto your family, friends, co-workers and beyond. That way, they. might not only do backbends but somersaults, backflips and handstands!
