Taking 100% Response-Ability: Mastering Equanimity, Humility, Compassion, and Resilience
Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it." – - Charles R. Swindoll
Life is a rollercoaster filled with ups and downs: car accidents, natural disasters, illnesses, financial ups and downs, and the everyday challenges that test our patience and resolve. When faced with these inevitable hurdles, we have a choice – to react impulsively or to respond with intention and grace.
**Blaming vs. Taking Responsibility**
When things seem out of my control, I used to blame myself and beat myself up. Others might point fingers at those around them, evading responsibility entirely. Blame only breeds shame and guilt, hindering real progress.
**100% Response-Ability**
Instead, I’ve learned the power of taking 100% response-ability. What does this mean? It means embracing the only thing within our control: our response. It's not about pointing fingers at ourselves or others but rather taking the courageous and resilient action needed to improve the situation without blame, shame, or guilt.
**Be the Thermostat, Not the Thermometer**
Imagine being a thermostat instead of a thermometer. A thermometer reacts to its environment, fluctuating with changes in temperature. A thermostat, on the other hand, sets and maintains the temperature. By being a thermostat, we establish and maintain equanimity—steady, consistent, and proactive—regardless of the highs and lows life throws our way.
**Staying in Love and Above**
This approach involves staying "in love and above." We control our emotional temperature, remaining steady and compassionate in the face of adversity. Love and compassion aren’t just feelings; they're powerful states of being that allow us to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
**Responding to Life’s Extremes**
Whether it's the extreme personalities we encounter, global conflicts, political divisiveness, or personal setbacks, our response can make all the difference. By maintaining our equanimity, humility, and compassion, we navigate life’s challenges with a resilient heart and a steady mind.
So, let’s take the higher road. Let’s be bold, courageous, and above all, patient in our journey. No matter what life has in store for us, we’ve got this! We can respond, never react, with poise.
